Masterpiece Watch Restoration
The Rolex Service Process
Servicing
of the Rolex Movement |
Every mechanical instrument with moving parts needs periodic cleaning and an application of fresh oil to maintain its precision operation. Your Rolex watch is of no exception. In your Rolex, each pivot of the train wheel and balance staff is dependent for its free action on the quality and quantity of the "jewel-holes". These jewel holes contain a certain amount of oil. If the oil is permitted to dry, the pivots will wear, and precision cannot be maintained. When a Rolex is oiled, it is first completely disassembled and each of the 150 parts is placed in a special chemical solution which will dissolve dirt, dust and half-dried and sticky oil spots that have accumulated on the individual parts. Then the watch is reassembled and various oils applied in the correct amounts are used to lubricate all key parts. Until recent years a lady's watch required cleaning every 12 to 18 months and a man's watch approximately every 18 months to two years. With modern oils and lubricants, the frequency has been lengthened. Watch cleaning and oiling require painstaking work and can not be rushed. Should it prove necessary to repair, regulate or overhaul your Rolex, take it only to a properly trained AWCI Certified watchmaker. You can be sure that in his technically skilled hands it will receive the attention it requires and deserves. |

Regulating |
|
Precise regulation of a Rolex watch is achieved by adjusting
the balance spring and timing screws located on the balance wheel, the
regulating heart of the watch. Regulating and adjusting are time-consuming
operations. In addition to a test on an electronic timing machine, actual
performance of the watch must be observed over a period of several days.
The watch must be in good mechanical order and accurately lubricated before
final adjustments can be made. The way that a person wears his/her watch
must also be taken into consideration when regulating a movement. Positional
"errors", can be minimized through adjustment, yet one must
expect a difference in the timing rate between a watch that is worn day
and night and one that is only worn during the day or at infrequent intervals.
It also makes a difference whether the watch is worn on the left or right
wrist, on the outside or inside of the wrist. It is important that you
inform the watchmaker of your wearing habits so that your watch can be
adjusted accordingly.

Adjusting
to meet the customers wearing habits |
1. A watch laid flat on a table with the dial up usually tends to gain a few seconds during the night. 2. In a vertical position with the winding crown pointing down, the watch may tend to lose a few seconds. 3. In a vertical position with the winding crown pointing up, the watch may tend to lose a few more seconds than in the position with the crown up. 4. To maintain the high precision of your watch, it is best to wind it at approximately the same time every day ... unless, of course, it has an automatic Perpetual movement. If your automatic wind watch has been put aside for a few days and has stopped, you should use the winding crown (about 15 turns) to get it started again before putting it back on your wrist. |
|
Water Resistant |
Many watches claim to be water resistant to certain depths. This can be misleading. Unless your watch was designed to be used under water, it is not considered reliably water resistant. We can only guarantee watches to be submersible if they are reliably water resistant, have been pressure tested by us within the last 6 months and the watch case and crystal are undamaged. Be sure the crown is screwed down tight every time you take your watch underwater. On the left is our Roxer 125 which allows us to perform a water test on your watch down to a depth of 125 bars ( 1,250 meters or about 41,000 feet). The Roxer 125 allows us to confirm the water resistance on diving watches such as the Rolex Sea Dweller. |
|
| Manual and Automatic Winding Watches | 1. All manually
wound watches need to be fully wound at least once a day. 2. All automatic
watches (watches that wind from the motion of the wrist) must be worn
actively at least 12 hrs/day. |
